Thank you for joining the 80th Anniversary VE Day Celebrations!
On the 8th of May , Easthorpe school came together in a wonderful celebration to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day—a momentous occasion that brought World War II to an end in Europe. The day was filled with learning, creativity, music, and community spirit, making it an unforgettable experience for both pupils and staff.
In the weeks leading up to the event, children across the school had been learning about World War II in History, exploring the causes, key events, and the experiences of those who lived through it. This important learning journey extended beyond the classroom, with a cross-curricular approach that involved Art, Design Technology, and even Food Technology.
As part of the preparations, children put their creativity and skills to the test by:
- Designing and constructing moving WWII-style vehicles in DT.
- Baking delicious Victoria sponge cakes, a popular wartime treat.
- Creating bunting and table settings to decorate our VE Day celebration.
- Helping to prepare food for our very own afternoon tea and street party.
On the day of the celebration, the sun was shining as we set up tables and chairs on the school lawn, transforming it into a festive outdoor tea party. The air was filled with the sounds of classic WWII songs, creating a nostalgic atmosphere that brought the history to life.
We were also delighted to welcome BBC Radio Nottingham, who came along to join the festivities. Several of our pupils were interviewed live on the radio, sharing what they had learned about VE Day, the war, and how it felt to take part in such a special event. (You can listen here at 1:46:30)
The entire school community came together in the spirit of unity and remembrance. It was not only a day of fun and celebration, but also a meaningful opportunity for children to reflect on the importance of peace, resilience, and community.
It truly was a wonderful celebration had by all, and a powerful reminder of the value of remembering and learning from the past.
